Ear wax build-up is a common cause of muffled hearing and blocked ears. Here's what to try at home first, when to get help, and what to expect from microsuction at KRevive in Corby.

Ear wax is normal and usually clears on its own. But when it builds up, it can leave your ears feeling blocked and your hearing muffled, and that's frustrating when you're at work, on the phone or using hearing aids.

Signs of ear wax build-up

According to the NHS, common symptoms include:

  • hearing loss or muffled hearing
  • earache or a feeling that your ears are blocked
  • ringing or buzzing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • feeling dizzy (vertigo)

What to try at home first

The NHS suggests putting 2 to 3 drops of olive or almond oil in the affected ear while lying on your side, 3 to 4 times a day for 3 to 5 days. This softens the wax and often helps it come out on its own.

Avoid cotton buds or fingers. They push wax further in and can make the problem worse.

When to get help

A pharmacist can advise on drops. The NHS recommends seeing a GP if symptoms haven't improved after 5 days or your ear is completely blocked. Not all GP surgeries offer ear wax removal, which is where a private service can help.

If you have sudden hearing loss, severe pain, discharge or bleeding from the ear, seek medical advice promptly rather than booking wax removal.

What is microsuction?

Microsuction uses a small medical suction device to gently remove wax while the clinician looks directly into the ear canal. Unlike traditional ear syringing, it doesn't use water, so wax and debris can be removed precisely while keeping discomfort to a minimum. It's a popular choice for hearing aid users and people with sensitive ears.
